SECTION II.—VARIOUS USES OF BEAN CAKE 1) Bran Caxe As FERTILIZER The bulk of Bean Cake put out at the bean mills in Manchuria goes to Japan proper. A part thereof is exported bo South China and the remainder to Chosen and Formosa. It is for manure for paddy fields, mulberry fields, ete. The ingredients of Bean Cake contain the three important factors of fertilizer, that is, nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potassium. Since the nitrogen contents amount to 6.8 per cent or so in the case of round cake (known commonly as Bean Cake), it will make an efficacious fertilizer to any kind of plants, excepting such as do not want much nitrogen. In particular, the nitrogen contents of Bean Cake being possessed of high absorbable and fertilizing properties. it deserves commendation as ditrogen manure. Bean Cake, while containing nitrogen to the amount of 6.8 per cent, has only a slight amount of about 1.2 per cent of phosphoric acid and 1.7 per cent of potassium, making it advisable to be used conjointly with phosphoric acid and potassium manures in many cases. In short, Bean Cake occupies the foremost place among fertilizers on the Japanese market, and not only is supplies nitrogen ag an efficacious nitrogen manure, but further it serves to furnish organic matters to the soil. 12
