29 lems of health and sanitation which they encounter in the field and in the solution of which they feel they need special advice. Such help, when definite regulations on the subject are not needed, is given direct to the inspector to aid him in solving, with the employer, the problems in question. This further broadens the experience of the field inspector as a practical safety engineer. Replying to inquiries from all sources concerning the dangers to health in specific industrial processes, the Section supplies data on the points in question from the experiences of the members of the Depart- ment or from published information which has been collected and made available by other investigators. In addition, the Section maintains sonstant contact with individuals and agencies interested in improving generally the health of workers and the conditions under which they are employed. A recent important work of the Hygiene and Sanitation Section has been the investigation of the health hazards of spray coating. This investigation was the first of its kind undertaken on such a large scale by any such organization in the country. Locations where this work has been carried on have been very carefully investigated and the conclusions have been published in a very comprehensive report. The report contains the first authentic information and investigation on the subject. The tremendous growth in the use of the spray method of coating surfaces has made it important that the health hazards to workmen be definitely ascertained. Tt is on the findings of this investi- gation that the regulations on spray coating promulgated by this De- partment were based. When the laws enforced by this Department and relating to the health of the workers require the preparation of posters, or abstracts of the laws for posting in the establishment concerned, the preparation ~f such material is done by the Hygiene and Sanitation Section.
