SCOPE AND METHOD
Proportion of Industry Represented
Data on earnings and hours of work were obtained from 36 hosiery
plants and for more than 10,000 hosiery workers. These constitute
12 per cent of the hosiery plants in the state and nearly one-fourth
of the hosiery workers.

Type of hosiery plants studied
The hosiery plants studied are classified as full-fashioned and seam-
less according to the type of product manufactured. The process
of manufacture of the two types of hosiery is distinetly different as
are the general conditions of employment. The difference in employ-
ment conditions may be to some extent a reflection of the general in-
dustrial prosperity which obtains in the two types of hosiery manu-
facture, as the manufacture of full-fashioned hosiery is a growing,
prosperous industry while the manufacture of seamless hosiery is de-
clining steadily .**
More seamless than full-fashioned hosiery plants were included in
the study, but the number of employes engaged in the manufacture
of full-fashioned hosiery was much greater than the number engaged
in the manufacture of seamless hosiery. In five plants both full-
fashioned and seamless hosiery were manufactured, In most cases
the plant was engaged primarily in the manufacture of one type of
hosiery and carried on only finishing processes for the other type of
work. The classification of the hosiery plants studied is as follows :
