FOREWORD ~ This analysis of the hours and earnings of men and women in the hosiery industry in Pennsylvania is the second in a series of studies of hours of work and earnings in the textile industry.* In 1920 the hosiery industry ranked second in value of products among the textile industries of the state. The importance of the hosiery industry in the state and the high proportion of women employed in this industry make this study of hours and earnings particularly important. The Bureau desires to express its appreciation to the hosiery em- ployers of the state whose generous cooperation made this study pos- sible. It acknowledges also the valuable assistance of the Bureau of Statistics, William J. Maguire, Director, in the tabulation of the data. The study was supervised and the report written by Beatrice McConnell, Assistant Director of the Bureau of Women and Children. The field work was done by Elizabeth Johnson and Rebecca Smaltz, investigators of the Bureau Sara M. Sorrer, Director. Bureau of Women and Children. *“Hours and Earnings of Men and Women in the Silk Industry,” Special Bulletin 29. was published in 1929.
