Un pays qui peut se donner de telles finances connaît 
évidemment des heures de prospérité économique. Pour 
en juger, jetons d’abord un regard d’ensemble sur son 
mouvement commercial {importations et exportations 
comprises) au cours du dernier quart de siècle :

Progression impressionnante dont la courbe ascen- 
dante accuse manifestement le développement écono- 
mique du pays. 
Pures apparences, diront certains, en ce sens que cet 
accroissement de chiffres est dû surtout à la dévalorisa- 
tion de la monnaie. 
Allons donc au fond des choses, et voyons comment 
s'exprime, non plus en valeur mais en poids, le mouve- 
ment commercial de la colonie, si tant est que l’on puisse 
additionner des arachides, du coton, du cacao, du bois. 
En 1913, le trafic-tonnage était de 700 000 tonnes ; 11 
passait en 1923 à 864 000 tonnes, en 1924 à 965 000 tonnes, 
en 1925 à 1 080 000 tonnes, ét en 1926 à 1 172 000 tonnes, 
accrèissement dû d’ailleurs davantage aux exportations 
qu’aux importations, car ces dernières, de 1913 à 1926, 
sont passées de 325 000 tonnes à 385 00Û tonnes seule- 
ment, tandis que les exportations se sont élevées dans 
le même temps de 382 000 tonnes à 789 000 tonnes.
