Wages are comparatively high in Mannheim—higher than in any other of 
the towns in South Germany investigated. Taking wages in Berlin as 100, 
the index numbers for the building trades in Mannheim are 81 for skilled men 
and 89 for labourers ; for the engineering trades, 96 for skilled men and 101 
for labourers ; and for the printing trades, 90. 
The following were the rates of wages paid at the same time to municipal 
employees, and harbour and dock employees :—
