Virtually no horseflesh is eaten at Aschaffenburg. Several enterprising
butchers have tried to introduce it, but without success, for local taste and
prejudice are against it Horse sausage has also been offered, but similarly
declined, and the amount sold is negligible and comes from Frankfort. At the
time of the investigator’s visit a solitary sausage formed the entire stock of the
little tradesman, resident in a street appropriately called “ Horse-market,” who
has for some time vainly tried to push this commodity, and he spoke
despondently of the prospects of this subsidiary branch of his trade (for he was
not a butcher), and admitted that horseflesh was unpopular.
