Co-operative Society sold 205,865 lb. of butter in 1906 it sold 329,912 lb. of

Dutch, but Swiss cheese was also bought in smaller quantities at 9to Is. Id.
per lb., and there is a considerable sale of small soft cheeses. More fat than
streaky bacon is bought, but the price of both was 8§d. to 9\d. per lb. in
October, 1905, and 8jrf. in April, 1907. The uniform price of milk was 2Juf.
per quart. There had been no great fluctuation in the prices of food stuffs,
except meat, during recent years, up to 1905, as is shown by the following
comparison prepared by the Municipal Statistical Office, and based on retail
quotations obtained from all parts of the town :—

Since 1905, however, as is shown by the figures in the following Table,
the price of bread and flour has risen, the price of 4 lb. of grey bread in April,
1907, being 6^&, as against 5\d. in October, 1905.
Coal is sold by the dealers by the hectolitre, the weight of which. is
variable, and may fall anywhere between loO to 165 English lb. The quality
bought by the working classes costs Is. 4\d. per cwt. ; if bought by the
11 Eimer,” a measure containing about lo lb., the cost is Is. 8JcZ. German
and English coal are equally used.
A large amount of coke is burned. It is a common thing for small grocers
to sell coal, but since 1905 a large part of the coal trade has passed into the
hands of a ring, known as the “ Kohlen-Kontor. While gas and the electric
light are increasingly used in houses of the better class, paraffin continues to be
the almost exclusive illuminant of the working classes, the usual quality being
that at 10\d. per gallon.
