BRESLAU. 123 of meat, which show that in 1906 the most inferior qualities of beef in Breslau were from 23 to 32 per cent, dearer than in 1901, while pork, which had dropped somewhat in price since 1905 was still more than 8 per cent, dearer than in 1901. Meat of all kinds lbs. 53 43 11 4 5 10 lbs. 51 41 9 3 4 9 1903. 1904. 1905. lbs. 56 41 9 3 3 9 126 117 121 lbs. 58 40 10 2 4 10 124 lbs. 50 39 9 3 4 1906. lbs. 54 37 9 2 3 So far as the staple flesh foods, pork and beef, are concerned the effects of the movement of prices shown in the previous Table may in some measure be traced in the above consumption figures ; the continuous rise in beef prices,, for instance, is reflected in the reduced consumption of beef, while the fall in pork prices in 1902-4, and again in 1905-6, corresponds with the increased consumption of pork in those periods. It will be observed that the consumption of horse-flesh is large in comparison with other German towns, and that it exceeds the consumption of mutton (including goat-flesh). Considerable quantities of fowl and game of various kinds, the weight of which cannot be estimated, are also consumed in Breslau, though principally among the middle and well-to-do classes. Among the working classes the consumption of meat is undoubtedly very much smaller than that shown above for the whole population. Returns Q 2 29088
