collieries in the vicinity the price of coal is low. Paraffin is the illuminant 
almost solely used by the working classes. 
The following table shows the predominant prices paid by the working 
classes in October, 1905, and September, 1907. It will be seen that most of 
the commodities included in this list show a marked advance in prices :—
