From the above figures it is seen that wages at Mülhausen are very low. 
Representing wages at Berlin by 100, the index numbers for Mülhausen are— 
for the building trades, 69 for skilled men and 76 for labourers ; for the engineering 
trades, 67 for skilled men and 81 for labourers ; and for the printing trades, 80. 
The majority rates of wages for workmen engaged in the municipal 
services were as follows at the same date :—

The wages of day labour employed in the service of the town have greatly 
increased during the past several years, and this increase has not been without 
influence on the wages paid by private employers for similar labour. Where in 
1902 the town paid 2s. 8d. per day of 9|> hours, it paid in 1903 for the same 
labour and hours 3s. 1§&, and in 1904 4s. 0\d. The large gang of outdoor 
labourers employed during winter similarly received in 1904 3s. 4J(/. per day 
against 2s. 8d. in 1902. For permanent unskilled labourers in municipal 
employment a schedule of wages has been drawn up, according to which 
labourers of the first class receive from 18s. to 25s. per week and labourers of 
the second class from 16s. to 21s. in the following gradations :
