It is a common complaint that in good times sufficient workpeople cannot
be obtained for the engineering industry, and even less skilled, industries report
a similar dearth of labour. Nuremberg’s development during recent years has,
in fact, been so rapid that the supply of skilled and trained labour has not kept
pace with the constantly increasing demand. Some of the larger works are
endeavouring to cope with the difficulty by securing a regular supply of youths
after their release from the primary schools, apprenticing them for four years,
and during that time instructing them at continuation schools without expense,
It happens at times that youths so trained seek their future elsewhere on
gaining independence, but it is the employers’ only hope of covering the growing
need for efficient labour. It has been estimated that barely 25 per cent, of the
workpeople in the mechanical trades are native Nurembergers, and it is a fact
that their number includes many Austrians and even Danes. It is noteworthy
that agriculture makes the same complaint of lack of labour, though here the
reason is different. In particular it is found that after the rural labourer has
served his two years in the army he shows little disposition to go back to the
country. The life of the town, its attractions, and the greater freedom which
industrial employment offers exert upon him an overpowering influence, and he
remains where his service has been passed, and helps to swell the urban
population.
The wages of skilled men in the engineering trades vary greatly and the
difference between the wages paid in certain large establishments and in the
smaller works is very marked. Taken as a whole, the range is from 24s. 4d.
to 34s. 9c?., while labourers earn from 17s. 5d. to 19s. 5d. The number of hours
