How these prices compare with those most generally paid by the working classes for sound meat at the ordinary butchers’ shops in Plauen may be seen from the subjoined Table, based upon information obtained at nine such shops, situated in different parts of the town, and all doing a considerable business with working-class families :— Predominant Prices paid by the Working Classes in October, 1905. and September, 1906. As articles of working-class consumption, mutton and veal are negligible. Taking prices at Berlin as 100, the following are the index-numbers for Plauen :—Meat, 115 ; other food, 98 ; food as a whole, 102 ; coal, 104 ; and “all commodities,” 102. The index-number for rent and prices combined is 92.
