REMSCHEID.
It will be noticed that in this diet potatoes play a very considerable part.
Dr. Ziegler states that potatoes are greatly used by all classes of workmen when
times are bad, and by the poorer classes at all times. The increase in the prices
of meat during the last two years has undoubtedly encouraged this recourse to
vegetables, and it is stated that at present potatoes, cooked in various ways, form
a more important article of diet than ever before ; roast potatoes are a favourite
dish. Prices, of course, vary ; but in October, 1905, the usual price was from
2\d. to 2j<A for 7 lb., and in September, 1907, 2fd. for the same quantity.
The chief kinds of bread sold are black bread (rye), " Nullbrot ” (which is
bread made of rye twice ground), grey bread (of three parts rye and one part
wheat), white bread (wheat), and “ Brödchen ” (rolls of wheat and milk).
Wheat and rye currant bread is also very popular. The native Remscheid
workman generally eats black and white bread, and is particularly fond of a
sandwich composed of a slice of each kind ; while grey bread is eaten more by
workmen and others who have come into Remscheid from other parts of
Germany. The bread is sold in all shapes and sizes and weights, except black
bread, which is retailed at a uniform price by members of the Bakers’ Guild,
the price being periodically fixed by the Guild and confirmed by the Police
Authority. This black bread is usually sold in 7 lb. loaves. The price of 4 lb.
was in October, 1905, 4\d. and in September, 1907, 5d.. but at the latter date
the bakers complained that they were selling at too low a figure and an advance
was inevitable. The price of both white and grey bread in October, 1905,
was 6|d. to 8^6?. for 4 lb.
For groceries generally the prices are fairly uniform throughout the town.
There is, however, a wide range in the prices of coffee, but the price generally
paid by the workmen is 11 d. per lb.
There is no difference in the prices of loaf and granulated sugar, both costing
in October, 1905, 2\d. and 2|d. per lb. Fresh butter cost Is. Ifd. to Is. 2\d.,
but there was a large consumption of margarine at 7^d., though cheaper
qualities can be had. The Co-operative Society sells three times as much
margarine as butter. Dutch, Limburg, and Swiss cheeses are all eaten, their
prices being 8\d., 4\d. to 5d., and Is. per lb. respectively. The price of milk
was 2\d. per quart. Coal is chiefly burned in the stoves, its price being 11 d.
to 11 \d. per cwt. in 1905, while paraffin cost 9\d. per gallon ; the prices of
both were higher in September, 1907, as shown below.
