SOLINGEN. 437 cost in October, 1905, 4¿d for 4 lb., grey bread 6¿d, and fine wheaten bread for the same weight. The price per loaf of black and grey bread seldom varies ; the weight is, however, increased or reduced according to the price of flour. The quality of coffee usually bought at the same time cost lid per lb. Dutch and Limburg cheeses are chiefly eaten by the working classes, the former costing 8fd and the latter 5d. per lb. in 1905. There are no longer imports from Holland save in winter, and the beef and pork then obtained from that source come ready for market. The prices of all kinds of meat have risen considerably here as everywhere else in Germany during the last two years. It is difficult to trace the effect of this on consumption, since no estimate of the town’s annual meat consumption has been attempted by the authorities.
