bread for the same weight. The price per loaf of black and grey bread 
seldom varies ; the weight is, however, increased or reduced according to the 
price of flour. The quality of coffee usually bought at the same time cost 
lid per lb. Dutch and Limburg cheeses are chiefly eaten by the working 
classes, the former costing 8fd and the latter 5d. per lb. in 1905. Fresh butter 
cost Is. Id per lb., but there was a large consumption of margarine at 7jd

Meat. 
The meat supply of Solingen comes almost entirely through the Cologne 
and Elberfeld markets. There are no longer imports from Holland save in 
winter, and the beef and pork then obtained from that source come ready for 
market. The prices of all kinds of meat have risen considerably here as 
everywhere else in Germany during the last two years. It is difficult to trace the 
effect of this on consumption, since no estimate of the town’s annual meat 
consumption has been attempted by the authorities. The following are, 
however, the slaughterings in the public abattoir during the years 1904-6 :—
