Town populations are usually given at the foot of the page; in some cases,
where the sections are short, at the end of the section. Those of the inland towns
>f Germany are given on p. 401 ; those of all towns of above 150,000 inhabitants
in the United States on p. 646. All the numbers are more or less rounded, and,
where the necessary information is available, not municipal or city populations,
but those of urban aggregates are given, for the reason stated in note 3, pp. 3334.
The town populations for Great Britain are based on the preliminary returns of
the census of 1921, either the municipal or parliamentary borough, the larger
being always taken as being most likely to correspond with the urban aggregate.
