Macaroni is manufactured to a considerable extent in Zittau. It
would appear, however, that in former years its manufacture in factories
was greater than at present. The cause for this decrease
in - factory output is that in nearly every city and town bakers
and others have started the manufacture of the article by hand,
thereby supplying the local markets. Another cause that has affected
the factory branch of the industry is the competition with
Italian and French macaronies. It appears that the Italian manufacturer
has a great advantage in the cheapness of production by
reason of the fact that he can dry his article in the open air, whereas
the German manufacturer must have large drying houses and heating
apparatus. Italy also finds an advantage in cheaper raw material
and labor.
Notwithstanding the unfavorable competition and conditions, it
can be stated that the manufacture of macaroni is a considerable industry
in this district and should furnish a market for a good quality
of macaroni wheat. Should the German manufacturer obtain the
same favors in the matter of drawbacks from the Government that
are enjoyed by his greatest competitors, the market for macaroni
wheat will be greatly enhanced.
The conclusion from my investigation is that there is a very considerable
quantity of macaroni wheat used in the district and a possibility
of a market for the American product. I would be very glad
to answer any inquiries relative to its introduction and use my best
efforts to secure the desired market.

No macaroni wheat has reached this market, and there is no
probable future demand for it.
The duty imposed on American wheat in Spain is 6.50 paseras
per 100 kilograms ($1.25 per 220.46 pounds), which makes it in
possible for American macaroni wheat to compete with the Spanish
