viz., that when the warehouse is full, the berth in front is 
automatically put out of action. The best position for a 
warehouse is in the rear of the shed, or even some distance 
away from the quayside. If found desirable, it can be

connected with the shed and quay by means of conveyor 
bands or transporter tracks, but it must not be allowed 
to interfere with the efficient working of either. 
At some ports, the warehousing of goods brought into 
the port is a matter of separate enterprise. There is a 
great system of warehousing at Trafford Park, Manchester, 
independently owned and managed, but worked as an 
auxiliary to the Manchester Docks. Goods are trans- 
ported direct from the quay to the warehouses on the 
Trafford Park Estate at a flat rate per ton.
