Soft corn is sometimes called flour corn and is grown only
in warm latitudes, as Mexico and Central America.
Pod corn is not commercially grown. Each kernel of the corn
has its own covering of husks. This form seems to be an inter-

mediate stage between the present commercial forms of corn and
the wild plants, from which corn is developed, as teosinte.
Varieties of Corn.—After deciding upon the type of corn to
be grown. the next step is to determine what variety is best for

the region and soil. There are perhaps many different varieties
offered which suit your region. (Figs. 46 and 47.)
One of the best ways of solving this variety problem is to make
a regional survey, as some of these varieties are better suited to
rich soils and others to poor soils, some to uplands and some to
lowlands, some to early planting and some to late, some to produce
fodder or silage and some to produce grain. It is necessary to
