salt mine. The value of these is altogether 3 milliard dinars. They are now to be
commercialised.
The branch of mining which is being carried on most energetically is that
of coal (stone, brown and lignite). This brings in an estimated national income
of 584,000.000 dinars, which is more than two thirds, 69,2%, of the whole mining
income. Copper takes the second place. The nation’s income from the mines and
smelting works amounts to 125 million dinars, or 14,89, of the total, while all
other kinds of mineral production give an income of 135 million or 16%. Between
1923 and 1925 only 237.961 tons of iron ore were obtained, and 14.323 tons of pig
iron smelted, or only a little over 1 kilogram per inhabitant, whereas Germany,
even after losing Alsace, Lorraine and Silesia had an output of 88 kilograms per
head. From iron ore, including its manufacture into pig iron, there is an income of
only 23.378.500 dinars. This shows how little this kind of industry has been deve-
loped here. In 1925, 147.000 tons of various metals and metal products, as well as
29.756 tons of machinery were imported into the country. On the other hand there
are such rich deposits of iron ore that they could both supply the entire present
needs of the country and even meet a considerable increase.
