Owing to the backward state of the smelting industry, in the years 1923—1925 
an average of 188.000 tons of ore was exported each year, or 799, of the total annual 
production.

These figures show that the smelting industry advanced rapidly until 1923 
and 1924, when the output reached its maximum, but in 1925 it dropped very 
considerably. This was a consequence of the extremely unfavourable conditions 
in the iron trade, not only in this country, but in the world generally. 
IIL. Copper 
The supply of copper is so large as to place this country first among the 
copper producing countries of Europe. But it is not only the copper mines which 
are famous; their exploitation also enjoys a high reputation in the outside world.
