Some kinds of leather are exported, and these have a good reputation ab-
road. One speciality exported is prepared pig skin.
There are about 70 factories and large workshops for the manufacture of
footwear, besides many craft shops.
The 11 largest factories can turn out annually up to three million pairs
of shoes, which, combined with the output of the small craftsmen, would be en-
ough to supply the whole nation.
Particularly fine workmanship is turned out by some of the manufactures
of fine leather.
The utilisation of small skins (sheep and goat) is only in its infancy.
Textiles
The cotton industry possesses over 112.000 spindles and 5.500 looms, and
the woolen 50.000 spindles and 740 looms, but in spite of the high degree of deve-
lopment in the industry, it is only able to supply a part of the needs of the
country. In addition to spinning and weaving enterprises cotton bleaching,
dressing and printing are carried on. :
As regards the raw material for cotton spinning, the raw thread has to be
imported for the most part, since the cotton production of South Serbia is stil
very small. The wool spinners import the finer kinds of wool, which they mix with
home wool.
The hemp and linen industries were rapidly expending before the war.
The parcellation of the large estates by agrarian reform however has reduced the
growth of flax and hemp and with them the industry which undertook their spin-
ning and weaving.
The hemp industry is confined mainly to semi-manufactures, i. e. tow,
which is chiefly exported (about 7.000 tons yearly).
The manufacture of hemp into string, rope and rope goods is carried on in
9 large and medium factories, apart from small workshops. These can supply the
whole country and export in addition 200—400 tons a year.
Linen
There are 10 textile industries, large and small, with a joint capacity of over
3 million metres of linen fabrics annually.
There is one modern factory which manufactures jute into sacks and which
is able to supply a large proportion of the national demand.
In addition there are 70 larger and smaller workshops manufacturing ho-
siery, knitted goods, ribbons, braid, curtains, lace embroideries, impregnated
fabrics, artificial silk goods, collars, wadding and quilts. There are over 25 factories
of cotton underwear, 4 woollen cap manufactures, 3 felt hat factories, as well as
many small ones producing altogether over 2,000.000 hats annually. About 15
factories make straw hats, some of which produce annually 1 million good quality
hats for export.
The ‘capacity of the umbrella and parasol factories and small workshops
is about 200.000 a year.
