There was not enough silk to supply the 
demand. Every woman in the world wanted 
it. There was always a shortage. There is a 
shortage to-day. 
It was very evident that some other way 
must be found’ to make silk. So, we had to 
call in the CHEMIST, and he did the trick. 
We had to create an entirely new trade, with 
a new technique and new machinery. And, 
as we shall see in the next chapter, the man 
who started it was an Englishman.
