THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK
Artificial Silk can be made from many
materials. It has been made from maize
and milk and various other substances. The
main thing, so far as raw materials are con-
cerned, seems to be cheapness. No one
knows, as yet, what Artificial Silk will even-
tually be made from. Apparently, our
marvellous chemists can take almost anything
and make a silk gown out of it.
Eventually, the whole process will be done
continuously, on one great machine. The
machine will be in two parts, the first dealing
with the chemical operations and the second
with mechanical operations. The material
will flow steadily forwards in a river of mass
production.
All this mastery of new materials and
production of new textiles has been wrought
by the Chemist. The victorious CHEMIST!
He deserves a word of praise for it all.
He is the new Magician of trade and com-
merce. He takes a tree, waves his wand
and Presto—it becomes a silk dress, all shining
and radiant. He picks up a sack of despised
cotton waste, from the rear of a mill in
Oldham. He plunges it into magical baths
