William Julian Courtauld. He is crippled by
a weakness of the thigh, but he is very active
in the public affairs of Braintree and Essex
county. He is a magistrate and town
councillor. He lives in a house called ““ Penny
Pot.” His hobbies are music and astronomy.
He has given Braintree a £20,000 recreation
ground, a £25,000 hospital, and a £50,000
town hall.

They have many interests besides business

Courtauld is a sculptor. And Miss Katherine
M. Courtauld is a practical farmer.

The Rev. Maitland S. Courtauld is a
curate—the richest curate in England, no
doubt. He has spent his whole life in the
London slums. He is an ascetic-looking man
of about 50. His church is St. Peter’s, at
Wapping. He has been labouring here, to
relieve the miseries and to strengthen the
faith of the poor, for more than 20 years.
