The use of automobiles as public carriers is steadily expanding as
shown by increased registration of taxis, busses, and cars for hire.
There were 203,356 such vehicles reported in 1925. The number in
the State of New York was 30,045. The use of auto busses is increasing
 within cities, between cities and their suburbs, and between
smaller towns and villages. Railways are using a considerable and
growing number of flanged wheel motor busses on short and feeder
lines. Electric railways are increasingly operating busses in connection
 with their other services. Both steam and electric railways
in many cases complain of loss of passenger traffic through competition
 of bus lines and through the increasing use of private automobiles.
 Most automotive travel, however, represents a net addition
to the total volume of movement of persons which would not ntherwise
 have taken place.
There is also decided increase in the use of motor trucks for transportation
 between cities and towns. While some assert that this is
injuring the railroads, it is perhaps the more common belief that
