The shipping season for turnips varies greatly in the dif-
ferent states. For the United States as a whole, the month of
lightest shipments is May, while the heaviest month is October.
The trend of shipments is in a generally ascending and de-
scending scale to and from these two months, respectively.
Average annual shipments during the three years amounted
to 1,432 cars, of which Minnesota furnished 428 cars, or
nearly 30 per cent. Washington was second with 225 cars
and Wisconsin, third, with 187 cars. Shipments from none
of the other states amounted to so many as a hundred cars.

In addition to shipments of fresh vegetables in carload lots
by specific commodities, large quantities are moved in mixed
lots. This happens not only in those states that do not raise
large quantities of vegetables, but also in states that are large
shippers of vegetables. California, Texas, New Jersey, Colo-
rado and Louisiana, in the order named, are the largest ship-
pers of mixed vegetables, and originate over 67 per cent of the
total movement for the United States.
The shipments of mixed vegetables for the United States
as a whole in 1924 amounted to 28,352 cars, while in 1926
they amounted to 80,651 cars, an increase of 2,299 cars, or
8.1 per cent.

ment for the United States as a whole is fairly well balanced
luring the year. Nevertheless, there are two periods of two
nonths each when shipments are slightly heavier than the
wverage, namely, April and May, and August and September;
also one period, November and December, when shipments
are slightly lighter than during the remainder of the year.
The heavier movement in April appears to be due in large
part to an increase in shipments from Texas, that of August
«0 increased shipments from New Jersey, and that of Septem-
ver to an increase in shipments from Colorado. The large ship-
ments in May cannot be attributed to any individual state, but
:0 a combination of fairly large movements from several
states. The decreased movement in November and December
is due to comparatively light shipments from nearly all of
the states.
Forty-six of the forty-eight states ship vegetables in mixed
carloads, Rhode Island and West Virginia being the only ones
for which shipments of this class are not recorded.

There appears to be a fairly definite seasonal movement of
mixed vegetables in carloads from each of the states. Owing
