THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK 
of Artificial Silk filament are made every 
Seconp. This is equal to seven- miles of 
thread. 
Every spinning machine has 88 nozzles, and 
every nozzle has 20 pin-holes, through which 
the filaments are forced. There are also two 
other factories at Braintree and Wolver- 
hampton. 
As for the Courtaulds themselves, they are 
a historic family. They are descended from 
Augustine Courtauld—a fine old gentleman 
of France. He was a Huguenot. He fled to 
England to escape the wave of persecution 
that swept over France in 1685. 
The Courtauld family settled at Braintree. 
In 1800, George Courtauld started a little silk 
mill. It has never been pulled down. It can 
still be seen—a little old water-wheel mill 
that stands in the shadow of a new large 
factory. 
The Courtaulds are quiet, untitled people. 
They dislike publicity. All told, there are 
eighteen of them who hold shares in the 
company. They have become richer, I fancy, 
fay beyond either their dreams or their 
wishes.
