In this line of business, no fixed market is specified,
the deals being put through generally between the producers
and the local dealers or oftener between the dealers and
bean mills or produce merchants. Business between local
dealers and others at the larger centres along the railway
takes place comparatively less frequently.
(b} Grex Crops IN THE FIELD
Dealing in the green crops in the field is a peculiar
way of forward contract business in vogue in Manchuria,
especially in North Manchuria. A bargain is concluded
genedolly on the basis of an estimate harvest of Beans and
a price considered as fair about the time of delivery. Such
bargains are concluded with the producers or farmers about
June or July by fixing the time of delivery. 70-80 per cent
of the contract price is paid as earnest money in advance,
and the contract is countersigned by a suitable guarantor.
The stocks are taken delivery of against the contract paper
on paying the balance of the price at the appointed date.
The above method is repeated from year to year by
Chinese produce dealers and foreign firms like the Wassards,
ete., in North Manchuria. In some locality, the buyers
will pay the full price in advance against a certificate for
delivery of the bean stocks handed by the seller. This
certificate is known as ‘‘feitzu,”’ and pending the time of
