northeast of Quebec city including the Gaspé peninsula and that portion
south of the city of Quebec known as the Eastern Townships. The Gaspé
peninsula is a picturesque, mountainous country into which the Appalachian
 mountains thrust a spur from the United States. Its chief industries
 are lumbering, fishing and, to a certain extent, agriculture, where the
nature of the country permits. It is rich in game and its streams abound
in game fish. Many wealthy Americans and Canadians have fish and
game preserves in this district. The Eastern Townships are one of the
oldest settled areas of the province and were largely settled by Englishspeaking
 people after the British occupation in 1763 and by Loyalists
from the United States in 1784. There are proportionately more Englishspeaking
 people in this part of Quebec to-day than in any other part of
the province. The land is fertile and well suited to farming, and some of
