to some extent to the existing methods of marketing. The rapidly
changing styles in hosiery shades have brought about a situation that
makes the manufacturer feel that he does not dare to dye and finish
his product until his orders have been received ; and the result is that
the finishing departments tend to run on either an overtime or an un-
dertime schedule.
Variation ¥rom Scheduled Weekly Hours by Geographical District
Berks County had a higher proportion of full-time work for full-
fashioned hosiery workers than any other geographical area. There
was no overtime in this area for women workers and very little for
men. Women in Berks County, however, had more undertime work
than in any other area. The greatest amount of overtime was re-
ported for both men and women in Northampton County. Philadelphia
County also reported considerable overtime for men. Only one-fifth
of the men and a third of the women employed in full-fashioned hosiery
plants in Philadelphia County worked their regular scheduled hours.
In the seamless hosiery industry the number of employes for whom in-
formation on hours of work were recorded was too small to admit of
any significant eomparison by geographical district (Chart 6).
