[24 CANADA AND THE EMPIRE.

Roman Empire meant war; the British Empire
means peace. I am not a young man, and I thank
Providence I was born in Canada. But Canada’s
history is only commencing. As the nineteenth
century was that of the United States, so I think
the twentieth century shall be filled by Canada. For
myself I cannot see much of it, but when my eyes
close I hope it will be on a united Canada cherishing
an abundant hope for the future.”
