The  relation  of  the  level  of  wages  at  Stassfurt  to  that  at  Berlin,  the  latter
being  taken  as  equal  to  100,  is  expressed  by  the  following  figures  :—Building
trades,  skilled  men  71,  labourers  76  ;  engineering  trades,  skilled  men  80,
labourers  91  ;  printing  trades,  80.

Housing  and  Rents.
The  working  classes  of  Stassfurt  are  on  the  whole  well  and  cheaply  housed.
There  can  be  no  doubt  that  the  colonies  of  workmen’s  dwellings  attached
to  the  State  mines  have  exercised  a  considerable  influence  by  setting  up  a
standard  of  comfort  which  private  builders  could  not  afford  to  ignore,  while
owing  to  the  decline  in  population  since  1900  rents  have  been  stationary.
