Freibank  in  1905,  32  tons  consisted  of  beef,  of  which  about  a  ton  and  a  half  had
to  be  boiled,  and  half  a  ton  corned  or  pickled,  before  being  offered  for  sale.  The
average  price  was  5d.  a  pound.  Horse-flesh,  which  can  only  be  purchased  at
two  shops  where  no  other  kind  of  meat  must  be  sold,  is  still  cheaper.  The
price  for  most  of  the  cuts  is  5d.  per  lb.,  while  sausages  made  from  horse-flesh
(and  sold  as  such)  cost  from  3\d.  to  6%d.,  according  to  quality.
The  price  of  meat  at  Zwickau  is  high,  but  the  prices  of  other  articles  of
food  are  comparatively  low,  while  coal,  though  cheap,  is  not  so  cheap  as  might
be  expected.  The  index  numbers  are  as  follows,  prices  at  Berlin  being  in  each
case  represented  by  100  :—Meat,  113  ;  other  food,  99  ;  food  as  a  whole,  102  ;
coal,  73  ;  and  prices  generally,  98.  The  index  number  for  rent  and  prices
combined  is  86,  which  is  considerably  lower  than  that  for  any  other  town  in
Saxony.
