wachsend  lebendig,  daß  die  sogenannte  „Morganisierung“,
die  Beherrschung  oder  Kontrollierung  alles  möglichen  und
unmöglichen  durch  einen  einzelnen  oder  einzelne,  dem  Lande
nicht  nur  finanziellen,  sondern  auch  moralischen  Schaden  zufügen ­
  muß.  Während  ich  in  Cleveland  war,  wurde  —  und  dies
mag  die  eben  erwähnte  Tatsache  illustrieren  —  ein  satirisches
Gedicht  auf  Herrn  Morgan  unter  der  Arbeiterschaft
zur  Verteilung  gebracht.  Dieses  Gedicht  trug  die  Überschrift ­
  „It’s  Morgan’s“.  Ich  lasse  es  in  dem  englischen  Urtext ­
  folgen;  die  charakteristische  Färbung,  insbesondere  den
„Slang“,  würde  ich  in  deutscher  Übertragung  nicht  wiederzugeben ­
  vermögen.  Das  Lied,  für  das  auch  eine  eigene
Melodie  ersonnen  worden  ist,  hat  den  nachstehenden  Wortlaut:
„IT’S  MORGAN’S.“
I  carae  to  a  mill  by  the  riverside,
A  half  mile  long  and  nearly  as  wide;
With  a  forest  of  Stacks  and  army  of  men,
Toiling  at  furnace,  and  shovel,  and  pen.
„What  a  magnificent  plant!“  I  cried,
And  the  man  with  the  smudge  on  his  face  replied  —
„It’s  Morgan’s.“
I  entered  a  train  and  rode  all  day
In  a  regal  coach,  on  a  right  of  way
Which  reached  out  it’s  arms  all  over  the  land
In  a  System  too  large  to  understand.
„A  splendid  property  this!“  I  cried,
And  a  man  with  a  plate  on  his  face  replied  —
„It’s  Morgan’s.“
I  sailed  on  a  great  ship,  trim  and  true
From  pennon  to  keel,  and  cabin  to  crew,
The  ship  was  one  of  a  monster  fleet  —
A  first  dass  navy  could  scarce  compete.
„What  a  beautiful  craft  she  is!“  I  cried,
And  the  man  with  akimbo  legs  replied  —
„It’s  Morgan’s.“
