Diese materialistische Auffassung — im landläufigen Sinne dieses 
Wortes — scheint den Marxismus von jedem moralischen Bedenken, 
jeder Gefühlsaufwallung zu trennen, und, wie Schäfflb in einem 
oft erwähnten Wort sagt: die soziale Frage zu einer „Magenfrage“ 
zu machen. Daher ist sie auch nur mit Schwierigkeit von den 
französischen Sozialisten aufgenommen worden, die sich alle Mühe 
gegeben haben, sie mit einer Art Heiligenschein zu umgeben 1 ). 
Die reinen Marxisten sagen aber, daß diese Schönfärberei unnötig 
ist und nur ein vollständiges Verkennen dessen zeigt, was der 
Materialismus wirklich ist. Denn im richtigen Sinn, d. h. im 
esoterischen Sinn aufgefaßt, wie sich dies überhaupt für die ganze 
marxistische Lehre gehört, schließt der historische Materialismus 
■ keineswegs den Idealismus aus: was er ausschließt, ist die Ideologie, 
und das ist etwas ganz verschiedenes. Er unterwirft den Menschen 
durchaus nicht der Fatalität eines materiellen Milieus; im Gegen 
teil, er sieht die Entwicklung in „dem bewußten, wenn auch be 
hinderten Streben der Menschen, den sozialen Bedingungen, unter 
denen sie leben, zu entrinnen“ 2 ). So wäre also der historische 
Materialismus zuletzt eine Art Philosophie des Strebens 8 ). Man wird 
verstehen, wie schwierig es ist, so nebelhafte Doktrinen zu kritisieren. 
oder auch nur eines bis zum äußersten getriebenen Determinismus zu sehen. Der 
Marxismus erbebt den Anspruch, ein Erzieher zur Energie zu sein, was er auch wirklich 
ist. Die Arbeiter müssen, nachdem sie klar gesehen haben, wo ihre Interessen liegen, 
mit allen ihren Kräften in dieser Richtung arbeiten. Nur brauchen sie zum Handeln 
sich nicht vorher ein zu erreichendes Ziel zu stecken. „Alles, was in der Geschichte 
geschehen ist, ist das Werk des Menschen gewesen, doch war es nur selten das Er 
gebnis einer kritischen Wahl oder eines vernünftigen Willens“ (Ebd. S. 133). An 
anderer Stelle. „Indem der Mensch nach und nach die verschiedenen sozialen Milieus 
schuf, . . . schuf er sich selbst“ (Labriola, ebd. S. 131—132). 
Wir würden aus dem Rahmen dieses Buches fallen und uns auf den Boden 
der Metaphysik begeben, wenn wir diese Lehre klarer darstellen wollten, — was 
sie übrigens recht notwendig braucht.

2 ) Labriola, op. cit. Vanderveldb (L’Idealisme marxiste in der Revue 
Socialiste, Eebruar 1904) schreibt, daß, „sich in letzter Analyse die Beweisführung 
(von Marx) auf ein Postulat der Moral gründet. Die Gerechtigkeit verlangt, daß 
ein jeder Arbeitende den vollkommenen Ertrag seiner Arbeit erhalte“. 
Nicht genau dasselbe sagt Landry (in einem Band, der Vorträge verschiedener 
Verfasser enthält: Etudes sur la Philosophie morale au XIX« siede, 
S. 164). Nach seiner Ansicht ist die Moral Marx’ possibilistisch, d. h. er nennt 
alles das moralisch, was die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung zu schaffen bestrebt ist, und 
unmoralisch alles das, was sie zu zerstören sucht. 
3 ) Daher bringt man heute den Neomarxismus mit Gedanken in Verbindung, die ihm 
anscheinend kontradiktorisch gegenüberstehen, nämlich mit den neueren philosophischen 
Lehren des Pragmatismus und denen Bergson’s (Siehe Guy Grand, La Philosophie 
syndicaliste).
