Java belong to the fiscal year 1825; those for U.8.A. refer to 1922
(subsequent statistical figure for U.S.A. are unavailable, except that
no remarkable change has apparently taken place; as to Manchuria,
the vgures have been inferred by the author only lately, based upon
those for the fiscal year 1426.
The aggragated total Bean outputs in ths chief centres of the
world ave roughly estimated at 56,000,000 ‘“‘kokun’’ which figure may
represent also the gross total outputs of the world. inclusive of the
ather countries than above mentioned.
Of the above total, Manchurian Beans take up about
33,000,000 “‘koku’’ being over 50 per eent and almost 60
per cent of the aggregate total. The tendency of increasing
production being quite pronounced in Manchuria, what an
overwhelming influence Manchurian Beans hold on the
world’s market may be easily understood.
SECTION 1I.—-HOW MANCHURIAN BEANS ARE
RAISED
(a) IncrEASED PRODUCTION OF MANCHURIAN BEans
As already hinted, there is no definite tracing of Bean
cultivation to its undisputed origin. They seem, however,
to have been imported from Central China. In old days,
Beans were grown merely as a food-stuff, but about 70
years ago, they came to be used at Bean mills for oil-giving
agent, attended with gradual increase in production. How-
aver, the demand for Beans was still confined to the local
Jistrict. Immediately after the Sino-Japanese War, (1894-
1805). Beans and Bean Cake began to be exported to Javan.
