be allowed and, if the Committee shall so deter- 
mine, required to appear before the Committee 
and defend himself. 
(iv) If witnesses are examined by the Commit- 
tee, the officer shall be given an opportunity of 
being present and of putting questions to the 
witnesses on his own behalf, and no documentary 
evidence shall be used against him unless he has 
previously been supplied with a copy thereof or 
given access thereto. 
(v) The Committee may, in its discretion, allow 
the officer to be assisted by a friend, being an 
officer in the public service, or in exceptional 
circumstances by counsel, and when such per- 
mission is given the officer's case may be 
conducted by such friend or counsel. 
The Committee may at any time withdraw their 
permission to the officer to be so represented, and 
refuse to hear his friend or counsel, in which case 
they shall allow the officer such adjournment as is 
reasonably necessary to enable him to present his 
case in person. 
(vi) If during the course of the inquiry further 
grounds of dismissal are disclosed, the Governor, 
if he thinks fit to proceed against the officer upon 
such grounds, shall furnish him with a written 
statement thereof and shall take the same steps as 
are above prescribed in respect of the original 
grounds. 
(vii) The Committee having inquired into the 
matter shall make a report to the Governor, who 
shall consider the same in Executive Council. If 
the Council are of opinion that the report should 
be amplified in any respect or that further inquiry 
is desirable, they may refer any matter back to 
the Committee for further inquiry or report 
accordingly. The" Council shall not itself hear
