Amend the Factory Acts. A.D. 1874.
Vy anna it is expedient to amend the Acts relating to the
employment of children, young persons, and women in
certain factories :
Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and
5 with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal,
and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the
authority of the same, as follows :
1. This Act shall apply to any factory as defined in * The Factory Application
Act, 1844,” as amended by the Act of the ninth and tenth of °f Act
10 Her Majesty, chapter forty, and by the Act of the twenty-fourth
and twenty-fifth of Her Majesty, chapter one hundred and seventeen,
and shall not apply to any factory other than as aforesaid.
2. The following provisions shall have effect with respect to the Amendment
employment of children, young persons, and females in factories to of Factory
15 which this Act applies ; namely, Acts
(1.) A young person or female shall not, except in recovering
lost time, be employed in any factory for more than fifty-
four hours in any week, or for more than nine hours and a
half in any day :
90 (2.) A child shall not, except in recovering lost time, or in cases
where children may work on alternate days, be employed
in any factory for more than five hours and a half in any
day; and a child shall not, except in recovering lost time,
be employed for more than ¢hirfy-three hours in any
925 week :
(3.) A child, young person, or female shall not, either for
recovery of lost time or for any other purpose, be employed
in any factory before seven o'clock in the morning in any
day: Provided that this prohibition shall not affect the
provisions of the Act of the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth
of Her Majesty, chapter one hundred and seventeen, with
respect to the employment of youths in lace factories :
