 There are only three companies of
any size in the United States. The third is
the Tubize Company, which makes only 20
per cent. as much as Courtaulds.

The two outstanding pioneers of Courtaulds,
 who created the Artificial Silk industry,
were Sir Thomas Latham and Henry Greenwood
 Tetley.

Latham came from Manchester. He was
a skilled financier and business-builder. He
had been thoroughly trained in the business
of making and marketing textiles.

Tetley came from Leeds. He was skilled
in the manufacturing end. He was a competent
 Works Manager. He was inventive—
constructive—managerial.

These two men—the Lancashire man and
the Yorkshire man—were the flint and steel
that struck the spark of the Artificial Silk
trade.

By a lucky chance, these two men met each
other. Both had heard of the experiments of
Swan, Cross, Chardonnet and others in the
making of Artificial Silk. They looked about
