Florida is the principal shipper of eggplant. Of the aver-
age annual shipments of 236 cars during the three years, that
state furnished 197 cars, or over 83 per cent. Of the re-
maining 39 cars, Virginia shipped 16 cars; South Carolina,
15 cars; Texas, 4 cars; Louisiana, 2 cars, and Alabama and
New Jersey each shipped one car.
Shipments from Florida were made in every month of the
year except August and September, the heaviest shipments
occuring in May and June. Shipments from other states
were made during July to December, the heaviest shipments
heing in July.
For the United States as a whole, the period of greatest
movement of eggplant is from May to July, about 70 per cent
of the total shipments being made in those months.

Lettuce
During the three years 31 of the 48 states shipped lettuce
in carload quantities, but only 9 made shipments in large
amounts, while 3 averaged less than one car annually.
California ships lettuce throughout the year. With the ex-
ception of that state, all other states apparently have a definite
shipping season, although Idaho seems to have a light season
in May and June and a heavier one from September to De-
cember.

Shipments from California far exceed those from any other
state. That state furnished 22,480 cars, or over 61 per cent
of the average annual shipments of 36,782 cars during the
three years. New York State shipped 3,513 cars: Arizona,
3,492 cars; Colorado, 2,309 cars, and Florida, 1,588 cars;
while the remainder came from widely scattered areas.
For the United States as a whole there is no marked peak
movement, but rather three periods of shipments; a month of
light shipments in June, a period of moderate shipments from
July to November and a period of heavier shipments from
December to May. The monthly shipments in each of the
latter two periods run quite evenly throughout the period.
" The percentage distribution of lettuce shipments by months
over the entire year is as follows:
January ........10.3% May cou... 8.9% September ..... 7.83%
February .... 9.6% ‘June .. 4.8% October... 1.7%
March .........10.7% July wi. 6.3% November ...... 7.4%

With the exception of all white potatoes combined, it would
appear from the foregoing table that the shipments of lettuce
in the United States as a whole are more evenly distributed
throughout the year than any of the other vegetables. This
in large part is due to the preponderance of the movement
from California, which ships heavily during the months when
other states are either shipping lightly or not at all, and to
heavy shipments from New York and Colorado when the
movement from California is liecht.
