This was a strange answer. Is it true that
Britain has become a land of indecision? To
a large extent, I believe, it is true. It seems that
we have developed a great deal of static willpower.


We have tremendous will-power in holding
on and enduring all manner of difficulties. But
we have very little dynamic will-power—the
power to make changes and improvements.
Few of our industries are now in the front rank,
and all because of this lack of dynamic will-Dower.


Up to 1890, Great Britain was the workshop
of the world. It was the supreme financial and
manufacturing nation. All other nations had
to learn industrialism from us.

Our grandfathers were strong, competent,
energetic men. They worked far harder than
we do. They made Great Britain rich.
Then, with riches there came easy, comfortable
ways of living. People became easy-going, fond
of sport and pleasure, and leisure, and long
week-ends.
