The number of “industrial workpeople” within the Free State area
enumerated in 1906 was 66,127, employed in 4,158 establishments, as against
48,714 employed in 2,065 establishments in 1902, since which year the number
of industrial establishments has increased by 101 4 per cent, and the number
of workpeople by 35*8 per cent. The workpeople fell in 1906 into the following
classes : 51,844 employed in 1,062 factories, 8,662 employed in workshops
employing motor power, and 5,621 employed in workshops in the clothing
trade. The largest group of workpeople was that falling to the engineering trade,
viz., 18,212 or 27'7 per cent, of the whole.
