In regard to these tables two points may be noticed :—(1) In the silk-stnif
factories from 33 to 50 per cent, of the weavers are women ; in the velvet factories
no women are employed as weavers, because the work is heavier. The employees
in the other occupations in both groups of factories are almost entirely women.
The proportion of weavers to the total number employed is considerably greater
in stuff-weaving than in velvet weaving. (2) There is no hard and fast
division between the two groups of weavers, and if occupation is slack in one
branch some of the weavers in it may pass temporarily to the other. This
frequently occurs, but it is stated to be much easier for the velvet weaver to go
over to the stuff weaving than for the reverse process to take place.
The next table shows the size of the factories in the whole of the Lower
Rhine industrial region in 1904 :—
