In this crucial hour, when the might of your Empire is being wielded to maintain the right of self-government for small nations, we feel con- fident that the whole people of Ireland would be grateful, loyal, and enthusiastic supporters of that high policy. “They ask for it through their representatives-—never has request more clear, consistent and continuous been made by any nation. As subjects of your Majesty, we are interested in the peace and contentment of al] parts of the Empire, and we desire to see this long-standing grievance at the very heart of the Empire removed.” It is interesting to observe what is thought in the Dominions beyond the seas of the armed resistance of the Ulster minority to Home Rule :— “ Honourable Members will recollect,” said Senator Stewart, “that just prior to the outbreak of the war there was some hope that Ireland would be granted a measure of Home Rule.
