Comme le nombre total d’entreprises de l’industrie 
était, en 1840, de 114.751 et celui des ouvriers de 
314.842 le métier absorbait 80.2 % des patrons et 
40.3 °/ 0 des salariés. 
Il est difficile de comparer ces chiffres avec ceux de 
1896, car Quetelet, l’organisateur du recensement de 1816, 
ne nous définit pas ce qu’il entend par artisan. Nous 
pouvons dire seulement que la Belgique était en 1846, 
un pays de petite industrie, et qu’aujourd'hui la grande 
industrie domine et absorbe plus de la moitié des 
ouvriers.
