at a bound in reputation, steadily increasing in its export
to Europe and America year after year, until they have
become a valuable merchandise in world-wide demand.
Taking note of this tendency, many Western countries
experimented upon the cultivation of Beans at home and
in the colonies, but none of them have yet risen above the
experimental stage. The Bean outputs are still very
trifling and, excepting the United States, no reliable statis-
tics are available about Beans.
We might now give a rough sketch of the leading Bean
rentres:
Taste (1) TENDENCY oF BEAN CULTIVATION AT CHIEF
Bean CENTRES
Outputs unit :
1.000 koku
Japan (Formosa
excepted) 2,999
Chosen (Korea)
4.352
Chief producing zones
Most abundant in Hok-
kaido, followed by the
Northeastern Prefectures
such as Iwate, Ibaraki &
Saitama, Kagoshima &
Kumamoto Prefectures
coming next.
From climatic and other
considerations, Nrth Cho-
sen is better suited to
Bean cultivation than
South Chosen, the outputs
being correspondingly
larger.
Tendency of production
Producing condition re-
mains the same. Seen
from a standpoint of
area of cultivation,
Bean raising considered
as bumping its head
against the blind wall.
Gradual increase noticed
by reclamation and im-
provement of farming
methods.
