16 CALIFORNIA AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE [CIRC. 42 proper spray materials should be obtained with the view of securing the best for the particular pests to be combatted. While it is sometimes advisable to make sprays at home it is now generally considered more satisfactory to purchase proven proprietary compounds from reliable spray companies. With standard materials and average sized trees, it costs from 6 to. 8 cents per tree including labor for each application. This application of the sprays or dusts to the trees is a most important consideration. Too many growers slight this operation. It is well for the grower to study the pests and to learn about their habits in order to apply control measures more intelligently. The proper timing of the application is sometimes more important than anything else. Thoroughness is another warning that must be repeated. The spray or dust should be applied to completely cover the parts of the tree where the pest is or will be expected.
