= THE FREEDMEN’S SAVINGS BANK 
that the government was bound for every dollar 
and that the money was placed in government 
bonds, otherwise I should not have put my 
money in there.” 
THE BRANCH BANKS 
Success attended the efforts of the bank pro- 
moters. Before the end of 1865 ten branches had 
been organized, and during 1866 ten more were 
established. In all, there were established thirty- 
four branches, thirty-two of which were in the 
southern states.”
