136 BRUNSWICK. matter is also largely in demand and is sold at 1 hd. and 1|d. per quart, whilst an interior quality costs \d. a quart. The price of coal ranged from Is. 2Jd. to Is. 5d. per cwt. in October, 1905, and from Is. 4d. to Is. hd. in May, 1907. For heating purposes, however, the working classes burn almost exclusively briquettes, which can be obtained at about eight for a penny, whilst for cooking they use a kind of coke, obtained from lignite, the soft coal mined in the district, for which they pay from 11 ^d. to Is. 3d. per cwt. A careful housewife burns about \ cwt. of this coke per week. The paraffin sold is almost entirely American and costs 11 d. per gallon. The following table summarises the predominant prices paid by the working classes in October, 1905, and May, 1907. The chief differences in the prices of these two periods are to be noted in bacon, which had fallen about 1 d. per lb. ; and in wheaten flour and rye bread, which had both risen. A walk through the working-class districts of Brunswick is quite sufficient to convince the observer that the consumption oí bacon and pork far exceeds that of beef and mutton. For whilst shop windows abound in which the former are exposed for sale, those containing beef and mutton are met with only at rare intervals. The return shows that in 1905, 87 more horses were killed
